Berdasarkan Keputusan Presiden Nomor 13 Tahun 2012 tentang Hari Konsumen Nasional, serta dengan mengacu kepada Undang-Undang Nomor 8 Tahun 1999 tentang Perlindungan Konsumen. Tanggal 20 April dipilih dan ditetapkannya sebagai hari Perlindungan Konsumen.
Selain untuk meningkatkan pemahaman konsumen akan hak dan kewajibannya, peringatan Hari Konsumen Nasional juga diharapkan akan menempatkan konsumen sebagai subjek penentu kegiatan ekonomi serta konsumen cerdas yang cinta produk dalam negeri. Dengan demikian, diharapkan pelaku usaha akan termotivasi untuk meningkatkan kualitas produk dan layanannya sehingga siap menjadi tuan rumah di negerinya sendiri dan mampu bersaing di pasar global.
Tujuan Perlindungan Konsumen:
- Meningkatkan kesadaran, kemampuan dan kemandirian konsumen untuk melindungi diri;
- Mengangkat harkat dan martabat konsumen dengan cara menghindarkannya dari ekses negatif pemakaian barang dan/atau jasa;
- Meningkatkan pemberdayaan konsumen dalam memilih, menentukan dan menuntut hak-haknya sebagai konsumen;
- Menciptakan sistem perlindungan konsumen yang mengandung unsur kepastian hukum, keterbukaan informasi serta akses untuk memperoleh informasi;
- Menumbuhkan kesadaran pelaku usaha, sehingga tumbuh sikap jujur dan bertanggungjawab dalam penyediaan barang dan/atau jasa yang berkualitas
Kiat konsumen yang cerdas :
- Cari informasi/data mengenai produk yang akan dikonsumsi
- Jangan terburu-buru memberi produk
- Pikirkan dua kali sebelum membeli
- Bandingkan harga dan kualitas ditempat lain
- Baca tanda jaminan dan peringatan sebelum dikonsumsi jika produk yang anda konsumsi tidak sesuai dengan yang tidak dijanjikan dalam label, iklan, promosi atau hal lain yang tidak memenuhi persyaratan keamanan, keselamatan, dan kenyaman sebagaimana diatur dalam UUPT
- Belilah produk yang berkualitas sesuai dengan kemampuan.
